Why Too Much Salt Is Deadly For Your Child And You
How much salt are we eating?
Let’s face it, we are all a little bit obsessed with salt. We put it in biscuits, cakes, cookies, curries, juices, and even butter! And we don’t stop there, we’ve come up with a bunch of different types of sodium chloride. Table, rock (sendha namak), kosher, Himalayan, iodized salt, and salt with less sodium – there’s no end.
WHO recommends that adults should consume less than 5g of salt per day, which is less than a teaspoon. For children (ages 2-15), this amount should be reduced, depending on their energy requirements – but never over 5g. And babies and toddlers less than two years of age should not be having salt at all.
For both adults and children, high salt consumption (more than 5g per day) can increase the risks of heart diseases and stroke. It can also lead to high blood pressure and kidney problems.
Approximately 2.5 million people die every year due to problems caused by high salt consumption.
Salt is tasty, but it can be deadly.
Salt and sugar have taken over our lives and made us forget how to value natural flavors available in fruits and vegetables, and as we move towards a world where artificial flavoring is ever increasing, BabyStaples is trying to take a step backwards and induce an appreciation for the pure flavors found in nature in children.
We believe that cultivating these habits early on can set children (and the future) on the right path. Most parents start giving their child salt early on, sometimes as soon as a few days into the start of complementary feeding of the child. When the child is just starting out with his/her meals, sugar and salt not only ruin the future food palate of the child by stealing the chance of tasting natural flavors, but they can also be dangerous. Sugar causes dental problems, obesity, and an increased chance of developing diabetes later on, and salt can cause kidney, blood pressure and heart problems later on.
